A Sad Year Made Sadder - The Death of Louie's

I am certain I am not the only Brown alum who survived for 4 years in Providence because of the cuisine of the Louis Family Restaurant on Brook St. just south of Benevolent, behind the Wriston Quad.

During the pandemic, Louie's added "patio dining" on the Brook St. sidewalk and closed for dinner, limiting its hours and offerings to breakfast and lunch. They also stopped using the term "grinder" (one of the New-England-isms I had to learn when I arrived from Cleveland) and replaced it with "sandwich." Nonetheless, it was a MUST stop on my visits to Providence since graduation.

Today, one of my Providence sources sent me this incredibly sad news from GoLocalProv.com:

In a message to customers, Louis announced that it is closing.

Louis Family Restaurant:

It's time for us to embark on a new chapter. Our legacy began with two brothers and will forever be defined by two brothers. We've had an extraordinary journey from 1946 to 2025, and we're grateful for the trust and loyalty you've shared with us over the years. Our last day will be December 31, 2025.

The restaurant has been a pillar of the Fox Point, East Side, and Brown communities for decades. The diner is located at 286 Brook Street in Providence.

I am old enough that I remember Louis and Dominic, the two brothers who started the place and occasionally insisted that I accompany my lasagna dinner with a small sample of their homemade wine instead of lemonade or diet Coke. Their photo in their US Army uniforms (after emigrating from Italy) was always hanging on the wall. The whole family participated in running the place, and it was like being back home in my Irish family of mom, dad, and us 4 kids - except Italian and a lot louder.

This side of life is all beginnings and endings. Join me in shedding a tear and searching for a large steak, cheese, and mushroom grinder (hold the mayo on mine) in memory of The Louis.

Wasn't the Boar's Head Market also down that street?

Great memory! Boar's Head Market was the SE corner of Thayer and Benevolent. I'm trying to remember everything else that was there - I believe Hillhouse Ltd. (men's clothes) was to the right of Boar's Head on Thayer, with the Wriston Quad to your back. There was another sandwich place and a dry cleaner/laundry, too.

The whole block on Thayer was bought up by Brown, and is now the Watson School of International and Public Affairs. Sure looks different!
