2023 and the Year Ahead

Dear alumni and friends of Brown,

We've had a busy 2023-2024 so far...

In June the club presented a Zoom discussion, emceed by board member Carl Schulkin '64, on the Pope's role in WWII with well-known Brown alum, professor, former Provost and Pulitzer Prize winning author, David Kertzer '69

The club's June service project last year, in tandem with the OC volunteer group New Beginnings, was fund raising in support of Afghan Refugee relief in Orange County. With BCOC support, the group raised $3,700 against a goal of $3,000.

In August, Amina and Hassan Albakri '00 hosted a total of 55 matriculating students, parents and club members at their home in Newport Beach.

September started off with our annual Shakespeare Festival outing at UC Irvine organized by alum Judy Kaufman '69. The play was the comedy "The Complete Works of Shakespeare: Abridged", and the production featured starring roles for two Brown alumni Crystal Kim '16 and Kieran Barry '16!

Kyle McIntyre '16 organized a bonfire party at Huntington State Beach on September 17th, and we were treated to live guitar music featuring Hassan Albakri '00 on guitar and Kyle on ukelele @thebandcoastal.

On September 21st the club again helped host perennial favorite "Best Colleges Mixer" at beautiful Equinox Sports Club in Irvine. Brown Club was joined by alumni from Stanford, Yale, Harvard and other Ivy and similar schools.

So far, in 2024, BCOC has held the following events:

On January 21st, Todd Schulkin '93 emceed Action & Resolution: Behind the Scenes of the Hollywood Writers Strike, a panel discussion between Todd, one of the head negotiators for the Writers Guild of America and two additional Brown alum show runners about the issues behind, and implications of, the recently settled strike.

On February 8th, Brown Club celebrated Lunar New Year/The Year of the Dragon at Blue Coral Vietnamese Cuisine in Fountain Valley. 13 alumni and guests came together to feast, play and celebrate the new year together!
