Earthquake Lady Lucy Jones to speak at Newport Beach Public Library Wednesday, April 30th

Brown alumna, Dr. Lucy Jones (A.B. '76, PhD MIT '81) and Southern California's own Earthquake Lady is coming to the Newport Beach Public Library to present "California's Tectonic Activity: Understanding the risks of Earthquakes."

A renowned seismologist, Dr. Jones graduated from Brown University with a degree in Chinese language and literature in 1976. She then went on to MIT to acquire a Ph.D. in Geophysics. She worked at the US Geological Survey ("USGS") and served on the California Earthquake Prediction Evaluation Council. She holds numerous awards and honors for her work in earthquake prediction and has published more than 100 scientific papers on this topic.
Following her time at USGS, Dr. Jones established the Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science and Society where she is chief scientist. She continues to work today on the complexity of earthquake prediction.
Dr. Jones' talk will provide insights into the potential risks and importance of preparedness for the ever-present threat of earthquakes. Her talk will help you to deepen your understanding of earthquakes and their impact on our lives.
