About the event
Join us virtually on Sunday, April 26 at 2 pm for an intimate conversation with long-time board member, Carl Schulkin ('64), as he shares a beautiful story about his neighborhood. In Carl's words:
Curious to discover how a park in Laguna Niguel came to be named in honor of Holocaust survivor Lilly Shapell, my search for an answer led me to the person primarily responsible, the then mayor of the city, Mark Goodman. Inspired by Mayor Goodman’s heartwarming account, I decided to read her husband Nathan Shapell’s memoir of surviving the Holocaust, Witness to the Truth. Only then did I discover that the foundation of the family’s later success as master builders and philanthropists lay in their work as advocates for Jewish Displaced Persons in Germany in the aftermath of the Second World War. I learned that the family’s success resulted not only from the efforts of Nathan and Lilly, but also from those of Nathan’s brother David and his wife Fela and their sister Sala and brother-in-law Max Webb. I discovered that it was truly a family affair.
