Brown Club Orange County joins the celebrations of 130 Years of Women at Brown and 120 Years of Women of Color at Brown with an exclusive event – a discussion with Oscar-nominated filmmaker Betsy West ’73 about her 2021 film My Name is Pauli Murray, a tribute to the late civil rights activist and lawyer.     In addition to My Name is Pauli Murray, Betsy West has received numerous awards over a 28-year TV and Film career which has recently included co-directing with Julie Cohen the biographical films RBG (2018), and Julia (2021). Betsy and Julie will soon be releasing their newest project Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down about Congresswoman Gabby Gifford’s perseverance in the aftermath of the 2011 shooting that left her partially paralyzed.

Acclaimed producer, screenwriter and USC adjunct faculty member Aaron Rahsaan Thomas will provide expert commentary. Aaron is one of the founders of BET Studios, a new initiative designed to provide equity ownership to Black creators in the TV and film industries. His most recent credits include the CBS TV series SWAT.
